    Build an interactive e-book reader

Kliv is an AI app builder. Describe an interactive e-book reader with glosses, audio, comprehension checks, word lists, and paid shelves, and it builds the app on your own domain.

    What is Kliv?

Kliv isn’t an e-reading product you configure — it’s an AI that builds software for you.

You describe the app you need in your own words, and Kliv builds it: the data, the rules, the screens, and the parts readers use. What you get is a real web app that’s yours. It can run on your own domain, use your own content, and change later when you ask for changes. It isn’t a template with your title on it.

On this page, that app is an interactive e-book reader. Kliv builds all kinds of web apps; this is one for reading, learning, and selling access to books.

Why build your own interactive reader?

A PDF can hold text, but it cannot teach around the text. If a reader stops for every third word, the PDF does not know which word caused the problem. If the audio lives somewhere else, the book and listening practice drift apart.

Kliv builds the reader as an app around your content. Each passage can have its own glosses, audio, checkpoints, reading progress, and subscription rules. A reader can tap a word and see the meaning you wrote for that exact sentence. You can see where readers struggle and improve the book from real usage.

    What the reader holds

Five kinds of record make the reading experience work.

    Text and glosses

A tapped word opens the meaning it has in that sentence. The gloss is written by the authors and tied to the passage, so readers are not sent to a generic dictionary definition.

    Audio by chapter and paragraph

Narration lives in the file store, chapter by chapter. A reader can play the paragraph they are reading, and access follows the subscription rules you set.

    Comprehension checks

Short checks between chapters store each reader’s answers. Authors can see patterns, such as many readers missing the same grammar point on the same page.

    Personal word lists

Every tap can be saved with the sentence it came from. By the end of the book, the reader has a review list built from their own reading.

    Shelves and subscriptions

Books can be grouped into level shelves. An $11 monthly subscription can open the shelves a reader is using, and access closes on the schedule you set if the subscription lapses.

An example: Ana and Marco’s Spanish readers

Here’s how one publisher might use an interactive reader built with Kliv. It’s only an example — you would describe your own books, levels, and access rules.

    01

Sofie starts with the right shelf

Sofie thinks she is around B1. Her subscription opens the A2 and B1 shelves, and the first novella opens to page one.

    02

A tap explains the word in context

On page four, she taps “madrugada.” The gloss Ana wrote for that scene appears, and the word joins Sofie’s list with the original sentence attached. Reading stops for two seconds, not two minutes.

    03

    Audio follows the same book

Chapter three, narrated by Marco, plays from the paragraph where Sofie stopped reading. The app keeps the book, audio position, and reading progress together.

    04

The check shows where readers struggle

Between chapters five and six, Sofie misses both subjunctive questions. So do forty other readers that month, so Ana can see exactly which page needs a footnote.

    05

The review list grows from real reading

By the last page, Sofie has 217 words on her list, each with its sentence. The B2 shelf is one tap further if she wants to keep going.

Describe the reader you want to build

Kliv builds from your description, so the more detail you give, the closer the first version. Spell out the books, access rules, audio, checks, and reader records. Here are three to build on:

    kliv.dev

    Graded Spanish readers

Tap-to-gloss stories with audio, checks, and paid level shelves.

“Build an interactive reader for my graded Spanish stories. Put A2, B1, and B2 books on separate shelves, let subscribers tap words for author-written glosses, play paragraph audio, answer three comprehension questions between chapters, and charge $11 a month for access to the A2 and B1 shelves.”

    kliv.dev

    Annotated classic editions

    Tappable notes and one-time purchases.

“Build an e-reader for our annotated classics. Let readers buy each edition for $14, tap highlighted passages to open editor notes, save reading progress by chapter, and keep a private list of notes they marked for review.”

    kliv.dev

    Read-along picture books

Per-page narration and a family subscription.

“Build a read-along app for my children’s books. Each page should have narration, a finished-book record, a parent dashboard for up to four children, and a $9 monthly family subscription that opens the full library.”

    How the reading app works

The book is stored as records. Glosses, checkpoints, audio positions, and reading progress live in your database. That is why a tap can return the right meaning and the app can reopen at the paragraph where a reader stopped.

The shelf gate follows the subscription. The $11 monthly subscription renews on your own Stripe account. Audio files and locked shelves read the same subscription record. Single titles can also sell as one-time purchases through the same checkout.

The dashboard reads the taps. You can track events such as readers leaving halfway through a chapter or tapping the same word many times. The data helps you decide where the book needs revision.

The words can stay with the reader. Word lists are the reader’s own records. You decide whether a lapsed subscriber keeps the list readable while the shelf itself closes.

A reading app is also a media app with a catalog and an audience. The wider pattern is covered on the media solutions page.

    Common questions

    What exactly is Kliv?

Kliv is an AI that builds custom web apps from a description. For an interactive e-book reader, it builds the pages, reader records, glosses, checks, access rules, and dashboards around your content.

Do I get a real app, or a template?

A real app. Kliv builds the database, logic, and screens for your reader. It is not a pre-made e-book theme with your files uploaded into it.

Can I change it after it’s built?

Yes. You ask for changes in plain words, such as adding a new shelf, changing a quiz rule, or adding an audio progress view.

    Is tapping a word cheating?

That depends on how you teach. A gloss written for the sentence can be instruction, not escape. The tap also becomes review material because it is saved with context.

Do readers keep their word lists if they cancel?

That’s your choice. Many publishers let the list stay readable because it is the reader’s own work, while the paid shelf closes when the subscription ends.

Can we sell single titles as well as subscriptions?

Yes. One-time purchases and subscriptions can live in the same catalog and checkout, and both can open content through access records.

Does Kliv write the books or record the audio?

No. The stories, glosses, and narration are yours. Kliv builds the reader around them: storage, access, checks, dashboards, and the live app.

Can I use my own domain?

Yes. The reader can run on your own domain, with your branding and your content.

Do my readers need their own Stripe accounts?

No. Readers pay by card. Payments run through your own Stripe account if you sell access.

Does Kliv take a cut of book sales or subscriptions?

No. Payments run on your own Stripe account. Card processing fees are between you and Stripe.

Will the books show up in search?

Pages can be served in a way search engines can read. You decide which books, notes, and public pages should be indexable.

Can I move off Kliv later?

Yes. The code syncs to your own Git repository, so leaving is a git pull rather than a rebuild.
